Skills development

First draft of magazine cover

This is the first draft of my magazine cover, through feedback i found out that it is not proffesional looking and i personaly think that i can change it to look a lot better. It looks rushed and the editing techniques arent as good as i know i can personaly do. By comparing it to proffessional products it is clear that it looks nothing like that of a proffessional standard.
Print Prelim Task from the beginning of the AS year

This is the magazine i created at the beginning of the year, i dont think it is very good because i didnt have very good photoshop skills when i started AS, so i used very basic stuff. My contents page looks very rushed and un proffesional. However the shot on my front cover looks proffesional and the angle and distance of it is good.
My skills have developed since them because i have learnt more about the technologies i can use to make my magazine. Examples of this are..

Photography skills
I have learnt basic skills such as the rule of thirds, how to frame a shot correctly, although the shot for this magazine is good in my opinion i was able to experiment more with different shots throughout creating my music magazine and i knew more about framing in genereal. Lighting is another key that i didnt know so much about whilst doing my prelim, as i created my final product i also experiment with different lights and exposures. I could also take the photographs in completely different places, as aposed to the fact that i was limited by doing my prelim because it was a college magazine.

The layout of a magzine
As I was doing my prelim I didnt look into different types of proffesional magazines so i didnt have the knowledge about creating the layout. My music magazine is better presented through the layout simply because i researched music magazines such as Kerrang!, Rocksound, NME, so that I could see how they were set out and what kind of headlines were generic for that type of magazine.

Editing and Fonts
I learnt that you could download new objects to photoshop such as brushes and fonts. Brushes allow you to be more creative and help with the aesthetic appeal to the magazine and Fonts help make the piece of work more exact to what you would want to create. I used www.dafont.com to download a range of fonts which i used for my magazine. I didn't know about this technologie for my prelim so thats why I think it looks bland and simple.

Photoshoot images

This image was taken in the studio at college. The image is very retro, modern style because of his stance, he is holding a piece of modern musical equiptment showing that he belongs in music. The lighting is bright which contrasts with my dominant image, therefore it will stand out more. The models clothing is simple, yet typical of the type of people i would aim my magazine at.
I am going to use this Shot as my Dominant image on the front cover. The shot is a medium shot. The people in the shot have long hair, and have the look of a typical "rock band" which conotes the style of my magazine. The pose is an unformal pose which makes it fit more with my magazine. Their will not be much room to write a lot of text on my cover, but from my research i have discovered that my audience prefer image to text therefore i will use less text on the cover. The lighting in the background especially is low key lighting, but i like this for this particular image because it almost looks like it has a black background.
